Wiper blade problem

Postby Monkeyzak » 06 Sep 2017 20:44

The wiper blades slide into the wiper arm with a pin. Mine slide in and out freely. Has something perished either on the arm head or is there rubber missing from the pin of the blade part?

Going to need to do a few decent journeys in the rain so don't want to lose a wiper.

More importantly you don't want to wipe your windscreen with the metal part of a wiper blade.

My wiper blades have a little flat spring clip that engages in a recess on the metal blade holder. This holds the rubber in.

There should be a spring that clips into a groove in the stainless steel pin but they do get loose.
See the clip and pin in these pictures.

The Lotus boys have the same fitting and one of them came up with this idea which looks pretty neat.

I have the wee clip but there's no rubber on the wee post or near the spring. Should there be?

The lotus solution might be a wee job when it's off the road.

You might have the wrong size pin. There are several different ones.

The retaining clip might need to be re-bent to hold properly.

I just replace the rubber part so the original wiper and correct size pin is there. When the metal parts get long in the tooth I clean it up with acid, electrolysis etc. and paint it with satin trim paint.

Should the little pin have rubber on it?

I think the pin might be too thin

The pin on mine is just steel, no rubber.

Would a local auto shop stock these? Or is it specialist part like SS prep?

I think it depends what make/type of replacement wiper blades you get. Some types have loads of alternative fittings including the steel pins, some are even stainless steel. Might be best to look around for those makes but I cannot remember which ones they are!
