How thick is the metal of TR7 body

Postby MikeRotherham » 08 Sep 2016 13:02

Can someone tell me how thick is the metal the bodywork is made with?

Specifically, the scuttle area under the windscreen.

Are certain bits made from thicker metal like on the classic mini?

Regards

Mike.

Roughly 1mm thick, I haven't seen any thicker steel and I usually use 0.9mm CR4 for repairs. Most of the body strength is due to gussets and profiling of the sheet steel panels, every time the metal is stretched for gussets etc then it will be thinned. Modern cars use even thinner steel which is a different grade to our cars.
I have replaced most of the bulkhead and the entire windscreen surround on my Grinall, the steel is very thin and delicate and is a pain to MIG weld.

Allegedly weren't the earlier cars made from thicker steel? supercass
