Need a new ignition key

Postby JamesD » 19 Jun 2015 12:56

The plastic key ring end to my one and only ignition key had recently snapped making the key liable to fall of my key ring.

Can anyone advise me of the best solution to getting another key cut?

I guess I need a new blank to take to a locksmith / key cutter but there appear to be many diffrent types of blank available on ebay all apparently suitable for a Triumph. Is there something in particular I need to watch for?

Any guidance gratefully received.

I just went to my local locksmith in Duncan (population 5,000) and he picked the blank off the wall and got it made up then and there.

My ignition key has a very short stubby plastic top so I am guessing it broke before my time and was cut down with a new hole drilled. I had a spare cut at the local key shop with an off the shelf blank but it does not have a plastic top.

As above I'd try a couple of local key cutting specialists first. The older the better. I did and they looked through their stock of blanks and cut a new one on the spot.

Get some polymorph and with the assistance of your kitchen kettle you can form your own custom key end. It's great stuff and sold by Maplins in the Uk if you want I could post some down as you won’t need a kilo
Check you tube for uses we quite often but thumb grips on small Allen keys to stop them getting mislaid
Near Penrith and the Lake District :)

Problem now solved by a helpful MOT man who not only passed the car but repaired the key with some 'special' glue that he thought would now outlast the car!

I will nonetheless get a spare cut just in case
