Fitting an immobilizer.

You can buy a remote key fob operated switch. Fit this inline with either the leccy fuel pump if you have one or the ign circuit with careful consideration to cable routing to avoid someone bypassing it too easily. The good thing about this is you can have it tucked away and / or boxed in under the car so it's invisible and inaccessible without tools.

My car has a hidden switch in the cable from the ignition switch. Trouble is, I only use it occasionally, then get back in and curse because it won't start until I remember to switch back on. Memory failing with age[:(].

I used a hrw switch fitted to my drophead which switches the low current side of the fuel pump (v8 electric) unfortunately the only time it has broken down is when the switch failed!

yes , it does seem a good way of immobilizing the car without too much intrusion - on the Scimitar i am looking at a RFID ignition switch - using an ardunio

Hi Chaps,

I've just finished replacing the engine bay wiring and can see its way too easy for a thief to start a standard (mechanical fuel pump) TR7.

You can put your starter motor or ignition feed through hidden switches, but all thats needed is to connect a wire from battery positive to the + side of the coil (ignition) and another to the starter solenoid on the starter motor.
And thats it! simples (unfortunately)

And if you use a battery isolator, the thief can do the above, but also connect a jump lead from battery to starter motor.

An electric fuel pump would be harder to get around if isolated via a hidden switch, but not everyone has an electric one.

There is the mechanical option, locking the gearstick or around the steering wheel etc.

But the best thing would be a sensor on the drivers seat, so if a thief sits down (without operating the secret switch) he gets a spike up his jacksie!

..and you get a ventilated seat (albeit with a few stains).

I use a Stoplock through the steering wheel as a visible deterrent. Don't know how good they are but I did know a guy who used one in the station car park years ago. Idiots sawed through the steering wheel, bent a bit back and slipped it off to pinch it - and it was only a Mk 1 Fiesta worth a few hundred at the time!
