Today I have been mostly Changing gearbox oil

Postby bonnietiler » 28 Mar 2014 16:16

As the pallid mimosa Sun cracked into the Morose grey curtain backcloth its shimmering beams glittered sporadically and startled the abundant hoarfrost, as their bitter tears began to drop unrelentingly onto the cold unforgiving ground, it knew that it must yield to the remorseless now Golden orb...at least for a few hours.
My rheumy eyes tried to convince that the motley yard would have to pass for a garage facility...again...
So Jack the back up on the diff plate get some axle props fixed repeat at the front to get the car aloft..but level.
Now tell me ...cos he must have benighted title...beelzebub, abaddon, behemoth...he was certainly, in a particularly jolly mood when he sited the refill plug wasn't he?
Lucklily, my 3rd Hazel Grove Wolfcub badge in Practical Gynaecology served me well.
I removed thin weak tepid brew from within and replenished with Motul 300, although the gearchange seems little better from cold, the improvement when hot is dramatic.

Bonnie definitely the most poetic description of a gearbox oil change in the freezing cold I have ever read. Well done.

I did something similar recently, only with the sweat dripping off my nose in our summer heat. I used Penrite manual transmission oil in mine.

I was changing from auto transmission fluid, so have not noticed any real difference in the gear change, but unless I'm kidding myself, trying to justify the effort involved, the box does seem to be running more quietly.

One thing that does stand out is the lack of leaking. There has always been some red drops of ATF in the drip tray under the box in the past, but this new stuff appears to be staying where it's wanted.

Wonders will never cease, could I really have an oil tight Triumph?
