Spot the difference

Postby UKPhilTR7 » 18 Mar 2014 07:23

Well this story started a few years ago when I brought the black gear gaiter, from ebay, which was purchased as a 5 speed one. This was to complete the black interior that I wanted to change my car to.

So finally, I got around to changing all the inside and put the gaiter on to find that it fitted all OK, but I could not get the ones towards the breaks in correct (2 & 4). I tried moving the surround down, but this did nothing.

I hunted down the old Tan one and looked at them together. No wonder the gears do not go in with the new black one on. It must be a 4 speed...

Bugger!
Good luck selling it on here in Oz, we didn't get any 4 speed cars here, so there's no market for 4 speed parts.

Lol thanks for that Cobber, I think it will have to go in the box of spares that may end up getting thrown in the end. That is unless I can find the same material and make a new one out of the bits.

You can give it a spray with dye/paint. I did my headliner with excellent results. I

If you have a spare black seat there is a big section of the vinyl fabric across the back. I used one to recover the center console armrest.

not that I've ever seen (read noticed...) or inspected a 4 speeder, but I never knew the panels were constructed differently and the shifter was placed more forward !!

That was my problem too. I have taken the tan one apart and now have some black vinyl, so fingers crossed.

Hi Phil,

I have some spare black gaiters to suit 5 speed gearboxes.

None are NOS condition, but I'm happy to negotiate an agreeable value.
