<font face="Arial"></font id="Arial">My TR7 windscreen wipers move very s l o w l y. They are barely acceptable in light rain if set to fast(!). The problem might be that the system needs lubricating or the motor is knackered. I've taken the motor to bits and it seems ok on the bench but fails to do the business in situ. Does anyone know of a replacement motor that might be better and cheaper than the original? How best to lubricate the drive tunnel? Still passes the MOT though. I try not to go out in the rain much but got caught a couple of times this summer.

I recall the famous saga of when Jaguar got back into racing back some 30 years ago. There they were, all out in front by a long reach when, all of a sudden, the lead car pulled over for some factory warranty work. The crowd fretted. Was it engine problems, the cooling system, did the window handle fall off? Nope, they had to pull over to fiddle with the corrosion on the windshield wiper connections. After that was fixed, they were merrily off again, passing all those Jap, Italian, and German cars like they were standing still.

Does this sound the least bit familiar?

Dearest Archie, why don't you NOT spend money on parts until you have cleaned all the electrical connections for the windshield wiper system. Then, report back to us.

I took my wiper system apart, cleaning connections, pulling out the rack and cleaning it and lubricating with some clear synthetic grease I had etc. under the assumption that any 26 year old grease would be getting pretty stiff. Mark the different sections with marker or better yet scribe marks so you can get them all lined up again easily. Also mark the parking switch mounting screw so you can get it back in the same position or close to it with minimal adjustment. It worked before but it's been fine since. I didn't take the motor apart to clean any commutator or like parts because it seemed pretty sealed and was working so can't advise in that area.

Check the wiper boxes for wear after cleaning them and lubricate them.

Word of caution. Protect the copper parking switch actuator with a stiff baggie as it is vulnerable and can be damaged while you're cleaning the long rack. As mentioned you may have to adjust the parking switch when you get it all back together to stop it from continually wiping but that is quite easily done relatively in situ.

As Mildred said, cleaning and lubing should be done first before any money is spent on parts.

I bought a grease gun tube of clear synthetic grease with the belief that synthetic grease tends to be less washed away with water and it is lighter than regular type grease and seems to work well.

3rd (or is it 4th?) vote for lack of lubrication.... Even just some oil dribbled down the wiper box spindles may help - it works well on other BL cars, although not had to do it yet on the TR7.

I took my wiper mechanism apart about a year ago and lubricated. It helped a little, but mine are still not great.

Looks like you can buy a wiper motor at rock auto,

I have used my wedge as my daily driver for about 2 years now, but I live in the Arizona desert, so it is very rare I need the wipers.

Parking switch needs adjustment. Either that or the switch actuator is cracked and not transferring switch. The switch can be adjusted with out removing mechanism, might have to undo motor mount to get at it.
