FUEL HOSE.

I have a problem with the rubber fuel hoses on my car which probably affects most UK owners.
Its been off the road since the end of Aug,when I switched the ignition on today the pump kept running,it usually stops when pressure has built up.
The fuel hose from steel pipe on the chassis to the carbs had hardened and fuel was squirting out.This pipe was fitted in Feb of this year and had perished already.
It was a Gates branded hose from the local motor factors and has never been a problem before.
I suspect that the increased methanol content in the fuel has caused this.
Has anyone else had this and did they find a solution?
God knows what its doing to the inside of the SU`s[V]

I did a post recently on this problem.

The advice from a specialist was with all fuel & hydraulic hose buy only hose which has made in USA on it.

Since the free trade deal with Mexico, a number of previously respected brands, including gates, are getting stuff made there. Some are also using Asian made hose. Both are inferior.

I actually mentioned I had a similar problem with hose from the same manufacturer, a previously highly respected manufacturer.

It was also recommended to use injection hose, as it is manufactured to a higher standard.

Yes, indeed, my friend. It is all a slightly veiled conspiracy by the U.S. Government in cahoots with your government to rid the world of our precious TR7s by rotting out the fuel lines and causing them to imolate when the alternator starts to spark, igniting a funeral pyre.

We had this discussion a few short months ago and reached an agreement to purchase and use only the new hi-tech hoses as intended for brand new cars designed for the latest, greatest worthless bile at the gas station.

It won't be cheap.

What it's doing inside your S-U's is nothing compared to the effects it has on the diaphragms inside a Z-S. Talk about nasty goo, whoa!

I bought a metre of fuel hose from Robsport a couple of years ago and have used it to do those short sections around the pump and carbs.
Its held up fine so far and didn't cost much.

My old fuel lines started falling apart a couple of years ago. So far my replacement hoses are holding up. Alcohol in the fuel is one reason I pitched out my old ZS carbs in favor of a new four barrel.

I fitted stainless steel braided race quality fuel hose a few years back.

It's difficult to cut and fit, compared to the usual stuff, costs a bit more but for the amount on my car it was well worth it. There are a number of suppliers on the net to choose from.

Well we have had a few posts on this fuel hose subject recently. With the planned increase to E10 (i.e. 10% ethanol) in the UK market, I think anyone with older hose on their car should be thinking about what to do.

To get methanol/bio fuel RESISTANT hose you should look for R9 spec hose, readily available on the net etc, often listed as fuel injection hose (note this is resistant to but NOT proof against methanol fuel).

To get methanol proof hose it appears that Teflon lined (PTFE) hose is the answer. Again it is advertised on the net, often with the stainless outer braid which may not be to everyone's liking, but I have seen it with plain black outer cloth braid.

I have just done my 7 with R9 hose, time will tell how it stands up[:)]
