Squeeky Horn

What's with the barely audible horn? It is kind of cute sounding but i don't think anyone will ever it take it seriously. I've been giving this some thought since I was cut off the other day by a mini van when I made a spirited turn through an intersection (I had a green turn light giving me the right of way)...

I don't think the other driver even heard my horn, I guess an upgrade would change that - but the Triumph horn does have a pretty unique sound.

They do wear out or get road debris in them or rust up. Mine sounded like what you describe. I bought a replacement pair from Rimmers. They look like the originals but are plastic and have two terminals instead of one like the originals. The old horns were metal and used the mounting for a ground. I made up a couple jumpers with a female spade connector at one end and an eyelet at the other. Put the eyelet over the mount pin and the other end to the - on the horn and the + hooked up normally. They are much much louder now.

Mine has a screw on top that adjusts the sound as you wind it in or out.

Mine worked OK, you have to have a clean contact and clean ground (the mount) to take full advantage of the power to it. I took mine apart to POE-15 it. On putting one side together I had mixed up the two gaskets (one is thinner) and I could only get it to work when I connected it directly to battery and not on car regardless of the adjustment. When I took it apart a second time I realized my assembly mistake. The horns are plenty loud enough, the problem is by the time you remember the horn button is on the stalk rather than the centre of the wheel like on the other cars the reason you want to blow the horn is long past.

I don't think I have used a car horn since the day, when I was about 19, that a girlfriends mother berated me for honking the horn, when I arrived to take my girl to the beach.

She gave me such a going over, I haven't been game to touch the thing since.

I had a similar problem with my horns. One didn't work at all and the other just made a quacking sound!.
Removed both, cleaned the outsides, dismantled them and discovered a fair amount of water. Cleaned the insides. One of the gaskets had disintegrated. So made another out of some polythene. Think I drew round an appropriately sized jam jar. Reassembled and now they both work very well. A good Saturday mornings work.
