Custom convertible top?

Postby Beableu » 08 Apr 2013 16:49

I don't want a convertible top with 3 OE plastic windows. I want just 1 single rear, glass window. The glass I'ld install myself. Most of the convertible top makers I've contacted say they will not make a top without 3 OE plastic windows. Only 1 custom shop said they would make one, for $1,600. That's crazy! That's what the TR7 cost me to purchase. I don't intend to keep it. But while I have it, I want it my way. I'ld think that putting 1 window opening in a top would be less cost, labor & time then putting in 3 plastic ones. Anyone know where to purchased a custom TR7 convertible top with 1 rear window opening at a reasonable price @ $444. or less? This is my first forum. Hope I did it right.

Hi,

[:D] WELCOME TO THE BEST TR7 / 8 FORUM IN THE WORLD EVER [8D]

The trouble may be in the fact you have to fold the side windows in to lower the roof, the danger over a period of time it will POSS split tear with the constant folding. Guess there must be modern type material that will allow this to happen though [?] Would certainly look different.

Cheers John

Getting anything custom is very expensive. It's not the materials it's the labour, once you very from a pattern it goes sky high. Don't know why you would want a glass window with no side ones. The side windows get rid of blind spots that can be dangerous. My top is original, 33 years old and still clear and looks looks new. But not as clear as when you unzip it and let it lay on the back shelf.[:p]

How about a removable hard top? It's got a glass rear window. You find them from time to time on eBay etc.

How about Rimmers (if they have them in stock)?

How about...find an old top on ebay that's intact enough to use as a template. Take it someplace and ask them to match it, minus the side windows. Or, find one in great shape and see if that one particular panel could be replaced. You could also try a place that makes tops for boats.

That Hardtop looks pretty nice... Does anyone have one of these? How does it connect on the back - the rimmers page mentions it locks on the front...

I have a Smoothline top. It looks a lot like what you are asking for.

They are rare, but when one shows up they aren't too expensive.

When I got the car there was no soft top at all; they had removed frame any everything. When i put the soft top back in I had to do some workaround on the hardtop to connect it at the back, because the soft top interferes with the tabs. But it works great for winter!

In my opinion, in the flesh, i.e. actually on the car it (the Rimmers / Lenham hardtop) probably doesn't look as nice. supercass
