Battery Gadget....

Hi Guys... Black & Decker make a 'booster' to start a car with a dead battery [from another] by linking their cigarette lighter [accessorary]sockets, rather than by a set of heavy-duty jump-leads.

Has anybody any experience of using these? They retail on Amazon for around £15 \ £25.

recently i was asked by my sister to help her get her car started, she could not get it going

with her jump leads, so i went over put my jump leads on and the car started first time.

I mentioned to her she should get a new set of leads and these would be perfect

but i am dubious if they are any good

Believe it or not but if you only have a flat battery and not a knackered one these actually work.
The secret is to connect it up and leave the battery to charge for 15-20 mins,then disconnect the lead and start the car.The donor car needs to be kept at a fast tickover.
They are a good idea as they can be kept in the car and don`t take up as much room as jump leads.
Its not a good idea these days to try and start off jumpleads-you can get a voltage spike that will damage one or both cars electronics.

No experience, but just looking at the wiring for the "booster", and the wiring to the lighter socket should tell you that you are not really going to get much current via that path. It might be OK to charge up the "dead" battery a bit, but that would take some time, and might be just enough to start a car when the battery is just barely below the threshold.

I had an MR2 once where the battery was dying. It was able to turn the engine over, but the voltage dropped enough when doing so that the ECU wouldn't turn on, so the car would not start. I suppose if you were in that kind of situation, this gadget might be enough.

I wouldn't want to try and start a car relying on the wire coming from/going to the cigarette lighter. I went for one of these smart chargers that charger at 2 amps then maintains with pulse. On sale flyer for $20, normally $40/$50. Better than my $10 2A battery charger that was no more than an AC/DC converter. Aaaah, progress.
