Gas cap gasket

Postby rgsSpider » 20 Oct 2012 23:22

I thought I'd share my little project. I found some 1/16" sheets of rubber on eBay that were 12"x12". Bought a couple of them because you just can't have enough of this stuff laying around right? I used my compass from art school with the blade attachment and ended up with a near perfect gasket! I've got some neoprene sheets on the way too which l will use to make a new larger gasket that goes right beneath the top of the gas cap.

Very tidy but the rubber seal should be neoprene which is gas resistant, rubber isn't. I used a black thin felt for the layer just below the cap as that closely resembles the original. I think I got it from Michaels, a craft store.

FI, the one I took off was the same kind of rubber. The old one is cracked but not falling apart. I'll have to see how close the neoprene is. I know there is a difference between US and non US cars, as far as venting the gas tank. At least that's what I've read. Could that be the difference between one being rubber and one being neoprene?

No. Neoprene looks and feels like rubber, it's what the original one would have been. If it was rubber it would have deteriorated long ago.
Rubber will work for a while, it just won't last as long.
