There are places online where you can send old radios and have converted to modern electronics on the inside - all they use is the housing. That way, all you sacrifice is an original radio and not a dash piece.

This unit may be a good option:

This unit is too wide...i've checked it out already. We have about 7" and this one is 8.5". It's way too wide because of the heater levers. Check out http://www.retrosoundusa.com/products/category/id/1

I'd personally go for an old fashioned unit. They sound pants so I don't even bother turning mine on - just enjoy the engine instead. However this would be different if I was travelling hundreds of miles or doing some regular commuting.

I'm with you there Shaun. Even during my 5,000 km trip to San Diego I didn't turn the radio on once. The English couple (came from just about 50 miles north of you) did play the Beach Boys "California Girls" over the two way radios as we were driving along the beaches on Highway #1 though. Maybe I'm just getting too old and crotchety but like in "American Graffiti" it seems the music went down hill the day Buddy Holley died (or at least after Woodstock '69). [8D]

There is a company in the US that will take your original radio (if you have it) and put in a new modern innards and clean it up, supply missing knobs making it looks like new. Don't have the website handy though.

Thanks for the offer but I think something more drastic is going to be required. It's not a major issue as I just pull the knob off next to it and use that if required! It's such a small knob it isn't noticeable until you use it and it's not there.

Plenty of food for thought on the overall solution. On the subject of music.. I like it LOUD and with max bass in my modern car, I have no music at all and never will in the V8 and in Vicki I just like to have on Radio Devon on my way to and from work. It's crap but it reminds me of my roots when they occasionally allow a real local some airtime.

I just bought a Radiomobile RM7628NCD for £45.
It is a head unit without a CD drive and takes a USB or SD card.
Its only about 3 1/2 inches deep because of no drive mechanism.
I thought it must be worth a try at that price.

I've bought a car stereo lenco CS 321.. If I find something nice, I will replace but only for a value price. So I have a solution and very cheap £ 30 or so

Car radios without CD drives are shorter and there are some from: Pioneer, Kenwood, Lenco ....You can connect your phone or USB flash drive with lots of music!

OK, classic look will cost - and a car radio is changed fast

This is the exact radio I used in my last two wedges (lets see if the link works...)

http://www.tonsofdeal.com/Reviews/Dual- ... eiver.html

Perfect small-chassis radio, cheap and has a spot where I can plug in my portable CD-player (so I can remove CD plyr from car so it wont be stolen). Keep in mind it is not powerful, but (like I did) get an EQ/Amplifier and hide it under the dash and you have a capable inexpensive radio!
You can shop around for a good price (I paid about $29.00 US., new in box) [:D]

I like the look of the Radiomobile unit. But when I searched for it on-line, several vendors say it can't be shipped to the US. I wonder why that is?
