sleepy rev counter

Postby mitchelltjohn » 12 Jan 2012 12:55

When I start my TR7 my rev counter needle remains at 0, even when I rev and idle car for some time.
The rev counter only springs into life when I drive the car for about half to one mile down the road after which it operates fine with idle and any engien speed. However, once I switch ignition off I am back to square one where rev counter needle remains at 0 until I agina drive the car for about half to one mile.

Any ideas what may be wrong and how to fix?

Yep, common problem.

This site seems to be down at the moment, but talks about what you need to clean:

Basically the needle get contaminated with some flux, and sticks a bit. Very easy to clean once you take it out.

Hi,

I got hold of 'real' TR8 tacho for my DHC from the US, installed and the bl88dy thing didnt work [:(!]

Gave Speedy Cables a call, posted it to them and they repaired it, also installed a little printed circuit and now it runs instantly [8D]

I'm on my 3rd revcounter and the first 2 both had this issue. A quick blip of 2,000rpm brought them to life. The delay wasn't a problem but they both expired around 12 years old..........

The website is backup.

Same problem on my TR7.
Worried me the first time I noticed it. I had just fitted an electronic distributor so thought something was wrong and it suddenly came to life.
Now I just expect it to be lazy and its fine after a short while.
Another one of those things you love about old cars.

Mine sticks for less than ten seconds. I know I can eliminate this by cleaning it but not really a problem so will leave it unless I need to remove the instrument pod and have the time to do it.
