Brake Master Cylinder

Postby cozyheatdave » 26 Dec 2011 21:56

I pulled my master cylinder from my parts car. It probably worked fine, but I just like new stuff for my car project.

Looking online I'm finding them for over two hundred dollars. Ouch!

I found a rebuild kit on Ebay for $13.95

Can someone tell me if this is the right kit for sure.
Looks like an easy rebuild.

I couldn't repair my brakes, so I made my horn louder.

Yes, it's the right one. The issue, tho, is the condition of the cylinder bore. Is it pitted? is it stepped from years of use? Would you be better served by having the bore lined with a brass or stainless steel liner? These options allow you to retain your original(?) part while restoring it to better than new condition. And, at a cost savings.

One last thing, over at www.rockauto.com they have a re-manufactured TR7 master brake cylinder for $89.00 and change. The deal is you send in your cylinder to them and it is re-manufactured to OE specs. Shipping is varied depending on your location. For me, shipping would be $11.34. So, for about $100.00 plus change, I could have a fresh brake master cylinder.

Would this be of any interest to you?

Apple hydraulics bore and sleeve for $80 (stepped bore). Brass sleeve won't corrode unlike a new one. Friend did it to his Spitfire one, came back looking like new. I picked up a cheap NOS one off eBay including new plastic reservoir. I'm a sucker for those types of things.

When you check the bore for corrosion only the portion the piston contacts counts. My Spider one was corroded outside this area and I overhauled it anyway and of course it doesn't leak.

Strip them all down, have them plated and the master cylinder sleeved. It makes for some nice bling and you know for certain that all is well with this part of your car.
