How To Remove Ziebart

Postby john 215 » 23 Jul 2011 06:06

Hi,

My new coupe was Ziebarted, for those who dont know what this is, its a rust proofing process that was sprayed everywhere, on the floor, in the sills, doors ect.

It done its job and has preserved her mainly rust free.

Unfortunatley under the bonnet was also done and now IMHO looks cr4p

Anyone ever found a way to remove this stuff [?]

Incidently, i have the original bill for this process, £71 pound back in Aug 76, this was not a cheap job at the time, looking at one of those 'how much in todays money site's' approx £700 [:0]

Cheers John

I have some remover at work. I will get you the name in the next few days. It is still hard work to get the stuff off but it doesn't attack the paint.

As for the cost of £700 that is what Land Rover charge today to have your paintwork treated so it doesn't need polishing. I guarantee it will after 2-3 years but the ziebart has protected that car for over 30 years from the scrapman.

My first TR7 was a 76(R) which I bought in 84, the rust was already terminal because of no protection.

I've used engine gunk engine cleaner in the past.
Put it on and let it soak in then stipple with a paint brush.
It works but very laborious.
Very rewarding though as you uncover the original shiny paint underneath. Then wash, dry and polish.

Hi John,

Great to see you have taken on another car.

I have had reasonable successs in the past with white spirits soaked well into a cloth - but it still needs quite a few goes at it.
Other than that try someting like panel wipe.

Or the easiest method has to be taking it to work and letting loose with a steam cleaner.

Hope to see you next weekend.

Cheers

I have a 1980 TR7 DHC project in the garage that was Ziebarted from new and I have a certificate to show it. However it still had door skins, sills and wheelarches done in 1988. The car has still only done 23000 miles now.
Wonder if the original owner would think it was good value?
