One of the many jobs I promised myself to do over the winter was to do something with the dash. It wasn't in too bad condition but had the usual scuffs and scratches accumulated over 30 odd years of use.
I toyed with getting the dash covered in either leather or vinyl but the amount of work required and the cost was too much. I didn't fancy trying to paint it either as I wasn't sure how long that would last.
So having seen many a rally car with a flocked dash I thought that might be worth a go, if it went horribly wrong I reckoned Ebay would come to the rescue with another dash at a reasonable price.
I searched out a company that would do it near enough to me so I could deliver it rather than leave in the mercy of a courier and one week later picked up a very different dashboard and A post trims [:)].
The process of flocking is done by covering the dash with glue and then firing electrostatically charged fibres at it. This makes the fibres bury into the glue and then its cured under heat lamps. I'm hoping that it will last and not end up looking like a mangy cat in a years time!
So far it looks good and I'm pleased with the results. Car is now taxed and insured for another summer so we'll see how tough it is.
