Gearbox torque

Postby nick » 21 Mar 2011 17:51

The Leyland Manual has a list of torques for nearly everything. So I looked up the gear box ones since I'm putting the front and rear covers on my 5 speed. The torques called out for the gearbox to cover are 10 foot pounds or 13nm. That's hardly more than hand tight. I went to 20 lb/ft and it still seems like not enough. Is spec that low in order that the gasket not get compressed too much?

Torque usually has to do with the bolt size and what it is going into.

dont forget to clean the threads with a tap, and lube the thread before torquing down, that way, small torque makes good enough tension on the bolt.

And flanges are torqued down in sequence , so after couple of passes across all bolts , the stuff is rigidly clamped.
