Still having wiring issues

Postby dartt123 » 21 Feb 2011 20:47

Thanks for the suggestions in my other posting. I have now come to realize that with the battery connected and my electrical tester grounded on the negative post of the battery, that any where I touch on the motor or and part of the car lights my tester up. Doesn't this mean that I have a short somewhere? How do I even begin to find it? I'm thinking since I have the dash all out, possibly unplugging the wiring harnesses to see at what point the problem stops. Does anyone know if I'm thinking correctly?

Hi,

Do you mean a multi meter, for example set on resistance, or a test lamp with the bulb lighting up [?]

Cheers John

OK....you got me stumped. If you touch light from negative battery terminal to any where on engine or body it should not light even if you have a short to ground somewhere. The only thing I can think of is the battery is hooked up backwards. These cars are negative ground not positive ground like the early 60's cars. I had a Hillman that was positive ground, a '62 I believe.

Hi,

Have you got the negative battery terminal connected to the battery ?

IF NOT CONNECTED then your test lamp is doing the job the normaly done by the earth lead , it will illuminate if there is a 'live' circuit swithched on, poss radio memory or clock, ect

To be sure you do not have a fault, place a Amp meter in place of the battery negative lead (wired in series ) and see what current pull you have.

Cheers John
