John Buffum does remember some TR7 stuff

Postby tipo158 » 19 May 2010 23:40

As some of you may recall, I am building a reproduction of a works TR7 rally car. Also, as some of you may recall, I am an official with one of the US sanctioning bodies for rally and an event organizer, so I know John Buffum. John ran a factory-backed TR7 rally car in the US and won the national championship several years in a row.

Unfortunately, my efforts in the past to find out how stuff was done on his old cars have been met with "I don't remember".

However, when I asked him about it at the Oregon Trail Rally on Sunday, I got answers instead. I was pretty excited. Of course, I didn't have my question list with me ...

Hi Alan,

Did Mr Buffum race any of the sprint engined versions?

According to a 1977 Triumph Sports Owners Association (TSOA)newsletter he did. There were 5 works cars, one for Canada's pro rallys, one for US (John's) two for UK/Europe (one was Tony Pond's) and one for UK national rallys. They were 16V that put out 220hp.

My rally car project is on hold at the moment. Because the furnace for my house draws air through the garage, all garage projects involving smelly chemicals go on hold during the winter.

The interior is mostly stripped and most of the excess brackets have been removed. Need to finish that. The stupid thing is that if I had finished that stuff, I could have sent the car off to get the cage put in over the winter and taken advantage of the time that I can't work on the car at my house.

alan-I have my rally TR8 going in for cage installation on June 9th. I just got done cutting out all the battery tray and wiper motor brackets so the shock tower can be extended to the roll cage. Drop me a message and we can chat about the two projects.
