Portland Historic Races, June 28-30

Postby Last TR » 27 Jun 2013 03:59

Well, I'm not going to be at the Portland Historics, but my car might be. My brother-in-law Gary and my sister Karen will likely be taking my TR8 because their MG is still in the shop. Say "hi" to them for me. I'll be at the All British Field Meet over Labor Day.

Ron and I are planning on going on labour day, plus another English couple with their TR4a that went down to California with me. We were going to get Bill down with his TR7 Sprint DHC but he's having problems with it. Took it to Osoyoos on a Triumph club trip but it went dead at Hope and had to have it trailered back. He's a little gun shy. Trying to get him to a car show this weekend. Stay tuned.

I'm not going to make the historic races. I am planning on going to the ABFM though. I need to find out why I'm loosing spark, I got stranded for the first time ever today. I need to get it sorted.

The best thing about the Historics is getting to do a couple of fast parade laps. I hope to go again in the next few years. This year it's the ABFM. Glad to hear you'll be there with some BC Wedges, Merv.

Jim, have you replaced your rotor lately? My unplanned stop outside of Scapoose last July was solved with a new cap & rotor.

Yeah, I did the cap and rotor a year ago. The symptoms were mostly the same except it would not start at all a year ago. They were really cheap no name parts though. Now it seems to start and run went totally cold, then die when warm. While driving the tach will drop to 0 and there seems to be no spark. I found the condenser and whole vacuum advance module had come loose. I tightened everything back up and it fired right up, then died a couple minutes later. So that wasn't it unless the condenser was damaged by not having a good ground. It fired up just now on a really warm day and ran for a couple minutes and quit again. I haven't had time to really root around and check it out yet.

Looking forward to coming down after missing last year, I think last time I was down we had over 20 wedges, would be nice to see a good size group again.
Car seems to be running very will but usually have problems just before a road trip, one time I had to push it off the ferry (doesn't want to leave the island).
How does it know?

Jim: That sounds a lot like a coil problem. They tend to act up the most once they are warm. The tach going to zero is also a clue.

I heard that only 7 Triumphs showed up for the club corral at the Historics. 3 of them were TR8s though. Maybe next year mine will be one of them.

I remember a few more Triumphs at the Historics last year. A couple things I really like about the Historics are the parade laps for the club participants, and access to the infield bleachers. I hope they go back to early July next year, though; I've got too many other things going on in June.
