Harpenden - Classics on the Common

Postby busheytrader » 27 Jul 2008 17:07

Unexpectedly, it looks like I'm not working abroad this week and might get a chance to get to Classics on the Common. It's too late to get a ticket for the common, so I'd have to wander about as a spectator after parking up the 7.

Anyone else likely to be there?

Cheers,

Adam

Hi John,

I wandered round your 7V8 a couple of times last night but you must have been off admiring the show. My son thought your 17" alloys set your car off nicely but then disappeared to find some more Nissan Skylines. I've never seen such a variety of classics in one place and so informal. It beats the usual indoor shows or classics in a field.

It was mighty hot stuck in the crawling traffic through Harpenden at 5:00pm after hotfooting it over from Robsport. It must have been close to 30 degrees and many classics pulled off the road due to overheating. E types, Healeys and a Cresta to name a few. A Jensen Interceptor owner with aircon on full blast behind me was moaning that he'd used 3 gallons to travel the last mile! My 7V8 temp gauge was higher than normal in the heat but nowhere close to overheating. The electric fan worked hard though before parking in the spectator field.

Hopefully I'll buy a ticket in advance next year.

Cheers,

Adam

I looked at going to this and was keen until I read the website where they were laying down the law about enforcing these police driving standards officers to scrutinise your driving and it put me off. Sounded like a good excuse to hand out some tickets to me, its bad enough out on the roads generally without actively putting yourself in front of them.

Sounds like all that went enjoyed it though, maybe I'll go down and watch next time.

Pity you let that put you off, it's usually a great evening although I didn't manage to get there this year. The reason for the warnings is that there have been problems in previous years with some people driving like complete idiots (racing each other, spinning tyres, etc.) which has led to complaints from the public and threats from the local Council not to allow the event to take place again. The organisers simply have to comply with the police requests on this if the event is to continue.

Let's face it Harpenden is a "nice" quiet country town most of the time and it's quite amazing that they even consider allowing it to be turned into a traffic jam and cover the common in classic cars once a year. Well worth the effort of complying with the police requests to keep it running IMHO.

Incidentally, depsite what it may sound like on the web site, I have never noticed the police being heavy handed about it.

Well as you say they did make it sound like a police ticket fest on the website. I dont know anyone who had been before so had no feedback as to what it was really like.

I had images of it being like what happens at bike night's these days where the coppers hunt around measuring number plates etc in order to hand out some tickets. Hiding round every other corner with speed gun's etc.

Sounds good though from what you guys are saying, maybe i'll be less put off next year.

Unless you had a number plate the size of a Mars bar or wrongly spaced letters there was nothing to worry about.

There were plenty of police on foot directing the classic traffic which effectively shut down Harpenden as everyone headed towards the common. All very good natured they were too. How many policemen does it take to bump start an overheated Healey 3000? I counted 5 until 2 of them fell over......

Hi,
As Adam said, there was a few police about but they were there on traffic duty and with that number of cars about it really needed them. People leaving the site had preference over the flow of traffic at the end of the evening much to the delight of the hundreds of spectators linning the route out of town and if the threat of the police kept yobs away then that can only be a good thing would hate to see this go the way of another meet i use to go to, The Chelsea Cruise spoilt by mindless idiots or am i showing my age!!!
Got a flier put on my windsreen about Croxley Green looks like another informal Wend night out with classic car lovers!!

Croxley Green's only the other side of Watford for me. Unfortunately I'm back to the routine of working overseas again so can't make it.

It's always nice to get a TR7V8 sideways and spin the tyres, but the Police will pull you over and "have a word" even on an empty road.
Comes under dangerous driving, even if you are not breaking the speed limit. I used to get pulled over on the way to work regular, but i did have it sideways turning right out of a "T" junction. [:)]
Was known as "having your collar felt by the law".
You listen to the lecture by said officer and then carry on.
